With a new 3D printer, a dual digital innovation hub and access to nearly 50,000 best-selling digital books, the new Toronto Public Library branch, located in the historic Fort York, is truly a state-of-the-art urban living room. “What we are creating are libraries for the 21st century,” said chief librarian Jane Pyper. “We want this branch to be a home away from home, where there is opportunity and access through technology or just a good book,” she said. The new library branch opened today to hundreds of eager residents and students. Former city councillor Adam Vaughan and mayoral candidate John Tory were also in attendance.

Toronto Public Library Chair Michael Foderick said it’s only a matter of time before the Fort York branch becomes a popular meeting spot in one of the fasted growing residential areas. “We’re doing something more than building a library. This is going to be the bedrock, the cornerstone of the community,” said Foderick. The 16,000 square foot library boasts a collection of 35,000 new materials, including books, periodicals and DVDs.

There are also views of the city and access to the soon-to-be-created Mouth of the Creek Park on Bathurst Street. Foderick, who is most proud of the way the library was funded – a debt-free $9-million budget – said the branch points to the library’s move toward digital-based media. “We want to stay relevant and push the envelope. Our electronic section is the fastest growing part of the library,” said Foderick.
